Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United must cut out the mistakes if they are to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils’ 3-3 draw with Everton saw them move to within two points of Manchester City. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have two games in hand and can widen the gap with victory over Liverpool on Sunday.
It seemed as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men would take all three points on Saturday. Goals from Edinson Cavani, Fernandes and Scott McTominay saw them 3-2 up on the Toffees with time running out.
Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez scored for the Merseysiders but it appeared as though the hosts would hang on. However, with seconds remaining, Dominic Calvert-Lewin poked home from close range following Lucas Digne’s free-kick.
Having gone unbeaten in the league for so long, United lost 2-1 to Sheffield United on January 27. They did put nine goals past hapless Southampton but draws either side of that result have stalled their progress.
Fernandes is clearly frustrated by recent events and feels they need to remain on point for the full 90 minutes.
“We were making so many mistakes in the last few games and we can’t keep conceding goals like that,” he told MUTV. “We have to be more focused, we have to have the same desire to score and to defend our goal.
“Every time we have to make goals and score goals it has to be the same to not concede and I think we have to learn from this.
“It has already happened a lot of times so it is more than a bit disappointing.”
Set-piece frailties need addressing
United have been found out by set-pieces this term. It was another free-kick that did for them this weekend.
An inability to win the first ball or clear their lines cost them two points against Carlo Ancelotti’s side. It remains to be seen if they can rally to make a title challenge.
Fernandes feels there will have to be a change in mindset if they are to stay with City.
“It is really bad and you can’t concede goals like that because from a full 50 yards they are a long way from our goal,” he added. “You can’t concede this kind of goals from that. We have to be more focused and we have to be ready and we have to be more stronger.
“We have to defend our goal with everything.”
